The Research

Science behind
the capsule.

The active ingredient in ExertX 24:7, Opuntia ficus-indica fruit extract, is one of the most studied botanical ingredients in the world with over 628 indexed peer-reviewed publications. Below are six key studies most relevant to the benefits experienced by travellers, athletes, and anyone under physiological load. Click each study to read more.

50 healthy adults received 1,500mg OFI powder daily for 3 months in this open-label prospective study published in Scientific Reports, a Nature Publishing Group journal. No adverse effects were reported throughout the full study period.

48.1% increase in salivary total antioxidant capacity • 59.8% reduction in DNA oxidative stress marker 8-OHdG • 28.3% reduction in malondialdehyde • 51.5% reduction in nitrotyrosine • 20.1% improvement in self-perceived general wellbeing

22 healthy male athletes received 150ml OFI juice daily for two weeks during high-intensity training using the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test protocol. No adverse effects reported. No significant effect on blood glucose or blood pressure.

Significant reductions in oxidative stress markers • Reduced muscle damage markers • Reduction in LDL cholesterol • Significant improvement in VO2max and maximal aerobic velocity • Reduced rating of perceived exertion, meaning athletes felt the same workload as less effort

14 international medical and veterinary scientists took OFI extract two hours before long haul flights crossing five or more time zones. All were seasoned travellers who were sceptical of any benefit before the trial. Flights covered routes to Australia, New Zealand, Chile, USA and SE Asia. Over 100 trans-meridian journeys recorded in total. Author declared an interest in Protex-H development.

Virtually all users reported removal of most or all jet lag symptoms • Normal operational capacity reported immediately on landing • Significant improvement in tiredness and cognitive difficulty on arrival • Mechanism: OFI stimulates heat shock protein (HSP) production, helping resynchronise peripheral circadian clocks

Roberts — Journal of BGTHA 2012 ↗

55 healthy adults in a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover trial received OFI extract five hours before alcohol consumption. The study found OFI reduced hangover severity by dampening the inflammatory response rather than altering blood alcohol levels, pointing to anti-inflammatory activity as the primary mechanism.

Risk of severe hangover reduced by more than half • C-reactive protein (CRP) 40% lower in OFI group • Significant reduction in nausea, dry mouth and appetite loss • Mechanism: anti-inflammatory, not alcohol metabolism

Wiese et al. — Archives of Internal Medicine 2004 ↗

Comprehensive open-access review of OFI as a functional food ingredient, confirming its safety profile, regulatory approvals, and bioactive compound profile. Covers betalains, flavonoids, polyphenols, and vitamins C and E.

FDA GRAS status confirmed • EU food supplement approved • 628+ indexed PubMed publications • Broad safety profile with no significant adverse effects at food-relevant doses

Monteiro et al. — Foods 2023 (Open Access) ↗

Healthy male athletes received OFI cladode and fruit skin extract combined with leucine after exercise. The study examined post-exercise recovery mechanisms including glycogen resynthesis and insulin response in a peer-reviewed sports nutrition journal.

Additive insulinogenic effect supporting faster glycogen resynthesis after exercise • Supports muscle recovery mechanisms • Relevant to athletes, shift workers, and anyone recovering from physical exertion
